Acrobatics and Tumbling "Flips Out" With Honors
An MEC Championship. A 2023 All-America team athlete. An NCATA Academic All-American athlete and 18 more on the 2023 Academic Honor Roll. And an NCATA coach of the year. Talk about a flippin’ great season for the Bobcats Acrobatics and Tumbling team!
The Bobcats won the NCATA open pyramid event final, beating out Baylor, Quinnipiac, Limestone and Coker and went on to secure their first-ever MEC Championship with a 265.545-260.610 victory over Fairmont State. That victory gave Frostburg an impressive 10-2 record on the year.
This continued to be a season of firsts for the Bobcats. Junior top/tumbler Abbie Baker earned the program’s first-ever selection to the 2023 All-America team. Baker already earned MEC Athlete of the Year and First Team All-MEC, helping her team win the Mountain East regular season and tournament championship while also qualifying for the national tournament.
FSU’s team not only performs phenomenally on the mat, but they are also standouts in the classroom as well. Junior Kaitlin Bolton earned the distinction of being named to the All-Academic Team, sporting a 3.78 GPA as a nursing major. She is the first athlete for the program to earn this honor in just the team’s third season. Each member of the All-Academic Team had at least a 3.70 cumulative GPA or higher.
In addition to Bolton’s accolades, 18 of her teammates made the NCATA’s 2023 Academic Honor Roll with a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher.
Frostburg’s great season wouldn’t be complete without one more honor. When NCATA announced its 2023 major award winners, FSU’s Head Coach Katie Nunley was one of them, earning the NCATA Coach of the Year. In just her third season, Nunley and her Bobcats set a number of program records this season, including the team’s highest meet score (273.510). Frostburg also posted two perfect scores this season in open toss, while defeating three ranked opponents throughout the year.
And that’s what you call a flippin’ great season!
