Recent National Tragedies

Over the past few weeks, our country has experienced horrible tragedies involving weapons. Three students are dead at the University of Virginia, four students are dead at the University of Idaho, and five individuals are dead at an LGBTQ club in Colorado Springs. Countless others have been wounded and/or are suffering sudden emotional trauma that will last for a long time.

As a university, we offer our deepest condolences to the victims at each of these aforementioned locations and hope one day these types of tragedies are in our rear-view mirror.

One thing that is certain – no one should have to die because of senseless anger, hateful motivations or violence. The bottom line is children should not die in their schools, students should not die on or around their campus, and LGBTQA people should not die having fun in a safe haven like a club.

We Bobcats stand and grieve with the two college campuses and the club in Colorado Springs in the angst, deep sorrow, pain, and questioning that each family and campus must now endure. The lives of young and old alike are lost, and who is to know the impact each victim could have made in this world had they been spared? The victims will never be able to see another light of day because of these senseless acts of possible hate and violence. While we stand in solidarity with every family and community affected by these horrific acts, we should also stand in outrage that these mass shootings and killings continue to make headlines across this nation.

You must know that our Bobcat Nation will make continuous efforts to protect and support each Bobcat that enrolls and matriculates at this caring place. We will continue to make health, wellness, and safety a priority for our faculty, staff, and students.

Students who are having difficulties and would like additional support may contact CAPS at 301-687-4234 or Student Affairs at 301-687-4311. All services are available for confidential support. We also have a committee that monitors the behavioral concerns of students on campus.

If you know of a classmate, peer, friend, or someone that you believe needs support services, please reach out to us. If you are an employee and are having difficulty and would like additional support resources, you may contact your health care provider (or Human Resources for referrals).

Like the police always request, if you see something, don’t be afraid to say something. You never know what might assist in making our community safe. If you feel unsafe, do not hesitate to immediately call University Police at 301.687.4222 or call 911 if there are any safety threats to you or other members of our campus community.

Please take the time to reflect and rest over this fall break with family, friends, and loved one!
