Learning Assistant Program

Want to build your skills in math AND working with people? Want to be part of the educational process? Want to build your resume and get paid? All of these at the same time? We have an opportunity for you!

Learning Assistants (LAs) work in a wide range of classes by assisting the instructor in group work and holding office hours outside of class time. You do NOT have to be a math major to be an LA--we hire students with interpersonal and communication skills from ANY major!

We look for Learning Assistants with the following qualities:

  • work well in groups of their peers in class
  • have good communication skills
  • earned a good grade in the course of interest, especially if they had to struggle for it!  Note: you do not need to have taken the course here (perhaps you took it in high school or at another institution) to be an LA for it

What's it like to be in a class that has a Learning Assistant?

Having a learning assistant means more opportunities for you to learn by doing! Classes with LAs use group settings to explore math in a teams. You have more space for testing you own ideas, developing your own understanding, and coming to your own conclusions, all while supported by the LA and instructor. You also have extra office hours available outside of class time.

How do we support you as a Learning Assistant?

New LAs take a one-credit hour course, Math 290, to learn all about learning! You'll meet with fellow LAs to discuss pedagogy, interacting with diverse groups of students, and how to teach (and not just tell). In addition to the course, LAs have weekly meetings with the instructor to prepare for class and discuss how best to support all students.
