President 1965-1969

A message from the Contributors

John Morey brought to Frostburg a commitment to liberal arts education that had developed through his education at the College of Wooster and Cornell University and through his teaching of English literature at Ohio Wesleyan and Hamilton College. During a difficult time on American campuses, Morey worked to provide a broad education to students in all disciplines. With the help of people like Nelson Guild and Kenneth Jablon, both recruited to Frostburg by Morey, what was a state teachers college began its transformation into a comprehensive university.

Throughout his life, Morey wished to provide the kind of opportunity that American higher education had given him; a chance for a son of Irish immigrants to become educated morally, spiritually, and intellectually.

The Morey family continued its ties to Western Maryland after Morey left to become President of Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania (1969-1984). His retirement to Deep Creek Lake ensured the continuation of friendships lasting over 30 years.

John Morey died February 21, 2002 and is buried in the Parish Cemetery of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Oakland, Maryland.
