William “Bill” Dayton Roy
1944-2023

William “Bill” Dayton Roy, 79, of Swan Point, MD passed away on September 30, 2023 at his home.

Bill was born on August 7, 1944 in Hutton, Maryland to the late Elwood Thomas and Mildred Grace Skipper Roy.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald Edward Roy; sister, Helen Pearl Roy Murphy; and nephew, Thomas Edward Roy.

Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carolyn Diane Smith Roy; nieces: Beulah Grace (Darn), and Milinda Murphy James; nephew, Michael Murphy (Dorothy); and numerous great nieces and great nephews. Bill was fortunate to have several great, great nieces and nephews and one triple great niece, Ella.

Bill was raised in Hutton and graduated from Southern Garrett High School in 1962. He graduated from Frostburg State College in 1966. He went on to earn a Master’s degree from Bowie State College and his Doctorate in Administration and Supervision from Nova University in Florida in 1980. He was employed by the Prince George’s County Public Schools System where he held several positions over the years; Teacher, Supervisor of Adult Education, Director of Classified Personnel Management, and Negotiator for PGCPS. He retired from the Prince George’s County Public School system in 1999.

He was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity while attending Frostburg State College, the Elks, the No Hunt-Hunt Club, and the Pay Day Friday Family. He was an avid New York Yankees fan since 1957. He rooted for the University of Maryland Terps football team. One of his accomplishments was walking everyday 2 to 5 miles consecutively for 4,489 days stopping only when he fell ill in April. Bill also played softball starting as a child in Oakland, Maryland. His love of the game continued throughout his life. He ended his playing days by playing on the Bowie Gold Team.

Bill and Carolyn have been surrounded and supported by many family, friends, and neighbors during this difficult time. A special thank you to Jakob Wolford, sister in-law, Chris Smith, great niece, Amy Welch and her husband Mikey, and June DeVito.

Bill enjoyed people and never met a stranger.
