Career Help Extends to Alumni

Few people land the perfect job right out of college. Likewise, it’s not uncommon to transition to a slightly – or completely – different career after a number of years.
For Frostburg alumni still in need of career advice, FSU’s Office of Career and Professional Development can help, even if you graduated years before.
“Alumni are eligible to access the office’s resources the same as current students,” said director Amy Robison Shimko ’94/M’20.
Alumni are encouraged to visit the office’s website at frostburg.edu/career-office to see the services available.
One service that can help those looking for work and those looking for workers alike is Handshake, an online career services platform that combines elements of services like LinkedIn, Indeed and Glassdoor in one location, which is connected to employers looking for the graduates that FSU produces.
Shimko particularly encourages alumni who are early in their careers or those transitioning to new careers to sign up for Handshake.
To sign up without an FSU email address, click on the Handshake link at frostburg.edu/career-office and sign up at the link in the top right corner. You can begin to build your profile right away, and after your FSU affiliation is confirmed, usually within about 24 hours, you can start making connections and searching for opportunities offered to FSU grads. Applications can be made directly through Handshake.
Alumni who are employers can post to Handshake as well, connecting with other Bobcats to share job openings, job fairs, information sessions, internship opportunities and more.
Shimko encourages any alumni to contact the office at careerservices@frostburg.edu or 301-687-4403.
“I frequently speak to alumni who are not certain what assistance they need, and we are able to explore options and discuss the process. Career changers often find this useful when they don’t know where to start,” Shimko said. “I speak with alumni virtually or in person, whatever best suits them.”
