Eagle Scout Alum Dr. Artie Travis Honored for Achieving Notability in Professional Career
Dr. Artie Travis, Vice President for Student Affairs at Frostburg State University, has been awarded the Outstanding Eagle Scout Award upon nomination by the D.C. Chapter of the National Eagle Scout Association and the Boy Scouts of America. This award is granted to Eagle Scouts who distinguish themselves in their life work and who share their talents with their communities on a voluntary basis.
Dr. Travis has distinguished himself through his career as an advocate for all students both in and outside of the classroom and through continued service by following the principles of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. He has met community service needs through voluntary actions.
The National Eagle Scout Association Committee, as part of Alumni Relations at the Boy Scouts of America’s national office, selects recipients of this award. Dr. Travis was chosen because he has achieved notability throughout his career. He served as a Specialist 4th Class in the U.S. Army before choosing to serve students for over 40 years. Dr. Travis attended Western Illinois University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Political Science and received his doctoral degree from the University of South Carolina. His dissertation embraced the comparison of leadership styles among senior Student Affairs officers. Additionally, Dr. Travis has worked in a multitude of higher education institutions with his career focus always being on cultural diversity, equity and inclusion.
“I believe strongly that the moments in times in my career have been about caring for the students that have impacted my life throughout my career,” says Dr. Travis. “I truly believe that you may never know when a student may catch a dream from you. Sometimes it doesn’t matter at all, but then again you may never know – it might.”
The Outstanding Eagle Scout Award was implemented in 2010 in conjunction with the Boy Scout of America’s 100th anniversary. The local council in the territory of the Eagle Scout’s primary residence has responsibility for nominations.
