The City of Frostburg was once again the site of a pirate invasion on Saturday, July 8 when Frostburg State University’s Children’s Literature Centre (CLC) and the City of Frostburg teamed up to provide a FREE day of pirate merriment, tales, treasures, and treats for young readers throughout the region.
Registration took place at City Place, where all young buccaneers received loot bags and participated in the “Scallywag Walk” to the Hotel Gunter for the illustrator presentation. While there, children had the opportunity to meet Lee Harper, illustrator of the picture book Turkey’s Sandtastic Beach Day. All attendees at the presentation received a tasty treasure!
Buccaneer activities for the event included pirate crafts, games, a photo contest, and a treasure-dig. Pirates also participated in a “Mystery Pirate Treasure Hunt” along Main Street, where they solved clues in a bid to locate treasure and fortune.
More than 250 young buccaneers attended this year’s event. “The CLC team was so excited to celebrate the day of fun that we ended it with a pirate themed after- party at the Frostburg Freeze,” said Dr. O’Neal. “Many buccaneers joined us and enjoyed the giant water slide in addition to the ice cream treats!”
A number of former education students from FSU helped during the event and brought their own children to participate in the pirate fun!
