Scholarships

Financial Aid

A limited amount of work-study money is available to mathematics majors. Work tasks include tutoring, secretarial help, and assisting instructors with classroom work. Questions regarding work-study employment should be addressed to the department chair. The following scholarships are available for mathematics.

Excellence in Math Scholarship (SENIOR)

Department/Contact: Mathematics/Department Chair

Criteria: The recipient must be a senior mathematics major at the time of receipt of the award with an FSU grade point average of 3.0 or above and a departmental grade point average of 3.5 or above. Participation in mathematics activities and future plans incorporating mathematics will be considered.

Excellence in Math Scholarship (FRESHMAN)

Department/Contact: Mathematics/Department Chair

Criteria: The award will be given to an incoming freshman who is interested in mathematics. The Department of Mathematics’ Scholarship Committee may require additional information, essay, recommendations, interview, etc.

CBIZ Math Scholarship

Department/Contact: Mathematics/Department Chair

Criteria: Applicants must be a full-time undergraduate student with a 3.0 grade point average or above with a declared major in mathematics. Preference will be given to outstanding Calculus students as determined by the Department of Mathematics’ Scholarship committee. The award may be renewable.

Roscoe Bartlett Scholarship

Department/Contact: Mathematics/Department Chair

Criteria: The recipient must be a full-time student with a declared major in math/biology/chemistry/physics or engineering and a resident of the Sixth Congressional District (Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, Howard, or Washington counties of Maryland). The applicant must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above and a 3.5 in the major. A preference is given to renewal applicants. Demonstrated need may be a determining factor.

Hedrick Teacher Excellence Award for Math/Science

Department/Contact: Educational Professions/Department Chair

Criteria: The recipient must be a declared education major (secondary, K-12) who has completed at least three upper-level mathematics or science classes with a major or concentration (24-hour specialization) in mathematics or physical science. Students enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program are eligible to apply. A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or above is required. Preference is given to non-traditional students and to applicants with demonstrated financial need.

Marlene Weimer Memorial Scholarly Endeavors Fund

Department/Contact: Mathematics/Department Chair

Criteria: The purpose of this fund is to support scholarly endeavors in the area of innovative faculty development initiatives and/or scholarship support for outstanding mathematics students, dependent upon the area of greatest need as determined by the Mathematics Department on an annual basis.

Morris H. Willey Memorial Scholarship

Criteria: Applicants must be enrolled (full-time or part-time) at FSU in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Preference will be given to student(s) majoring in mathematics and/or science. The recipient(s) must have an overall grade point average of at least 3.0. and demonstrated financial need.
