Robert B. Kauffman, Ph.D.

HIGHLIGHTS

Professor, Recreation and Parks Management - Frostburg State University. He was responsible for administering the undergraduate program in Recreation and Parks Management for 22 years. Currently, he has moved on from these departmental administrative responsibilities.

  • Developed a collaborative BS degree in Adventure Sports with Garrett College and Frostburg State University, 2014.
  • Developed a master's program in Park and Recreation Resource Management in 1994.
    Revised the undergraduate program in Recreation in 1996.
  • Grew the program from one faculty to four faculty.
  • Developed a no-new resources Hospitality Option with Allegany College in 2000.
  • Developed an off-campus 4-year program utilizing the Recreation, Parks and Leisure Studies program at the CCBC Catonsville in 2000.
  • Prepared the self-study report for NRPA/AALR accreditation in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. Received both initial accreditation and continuing accreditation. The 2015 COAPRT accreditation used the new stanndards.
  • Chair, Council of University System Faculty (CUSF) (2016-2018); Vice Chair (2014-2016); Secretary (2011-2013)
  • Vice Chair (2002-2003)and Chair of Faculty Senate (2005 to 2009).
  • Member of graduate faculty.
  • Tenured 1998
  • Obtained rank of full professor.
  • August 1992 to present.

Publications and Presentations. On average published one to three articles a year. Generally, presents from one to three national conferences a year. Past presentations include National Recreation and Parks Association, the Association of Experiential Educators and the International Boating Safety Summit.

  • Boating Fundamentals: A Manual of Boating Safety. National Recreation and Park Association, Arlington, Virginia, 1995. (ISBN:0-929581-93-8), 126 pp.
  • Created two award winning films: Cold, Wet, and Alive and Heads Up.
  • Created two award winning wallcharts: River Canoeing and Canoe Camping.
Expert Witness. Has assisted in over seven cases involving boating safety. Generally, he has had one active case per year. Click here for more details.

Theses and Dissertations. He has served on over twenty Master's and Doctorate committees and has chaired many of the committees.

Grants and Contracts. He has received over $1,000,000 in fifteen grants and contracts.

Board of Directors. He has served on several BODs, mostly the American Canoe Association and the Cumberland YMCA.
