Frostburg State University’s Student Government Association has been awarded the 2020 “Excellence in Service Student Group Award” by Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic, a nonprofit association that provides leadership to public and private, two- and four-year colleges and universities in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Delaware.
The award recognizes and honors a student group for “leadership in and commitment to service projects that extend beyond any co-curricular requirements or course-based service-learning. Priority is given to groups which demonstrate that their project led to long-term, sustainable, community impact.” FSU’s SGA was recognized in the public university category.
“I am very proud that our Student Government Association and its president, Noah DeMichele, have been recognized by Campus Compact Mid-Atlantic,” says FSU President Ronald Nowaczyk. “The award cites the ongoing commitment to events that increase communication on campus like town halls and, just as importantly and consistent with our campus values, the commitment to serving the local community. These efforts go well beyond those at many other schools and are sustained year after year as students embrace ‘giving back’ to the campus and the community.”
Despite the challenges of the pandemic over the past year, FSU’s SGA has been proactive in creating opportunities for students both on campus and in the community. Recent initiatives include working with the City of Frostburg’s FrostburgFirst Main Street program to strengthen town-gown relations, launching shuttle services for student safety and local shopping, leading city-wide clean-ups, sponsoring a food pantry, founding a town hall dialogue on civic engagement and partnering in inclusion and diversity programs, as well as changing the SGA constitution to reflect these commitments.
“I’m very proud of the SGA for receiving this award. It’s a reflection of a lot of great work the Senate has done this year, even during a pandemic,” says SGA President DeMichele, a political science/international studies major from Westernport, Md. “We still have more work to do, but we have a great Senate and a great supporting cast around us to help us reach our goals for the student body at Frostburg State.”
