Frostburg State University will celebrate the student achievements of its fall 2022 graduating class at the 161st Commencement Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in a ceremony on Wednesday, Dec. 21, in the Cordts Physical Education Center Main Arena.
University System of Maryland Regent Hugh Breslin will confer degrees, and FSU President Ronald Nowaczyk will present diplomas to the class.
This year’s commencement speakers are Jenna Griffith Newlin, from the College of Business; Marie (Summer) Sabatino, from the College of Education; and Brian Records, from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Griffith, of Oakland, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a minor in business administration. She has been involved in numerous campus activities, including serving as vice president of the Residence Hall Association, president and marketing chair for the College of Business Accounting Association, vice president of Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society and chapter operations chair and chancellor for Delta Sigma Pi. She has completed three internships at AccountingTasks4U, The Rhodeheaver Group, P.C., and First United Bank and Trust. “Jenna is the type of student who became fully immersed in much that we have to offer at FSU and will leave us not only with a very honorable GPA, but with a very well-rounded educational experience,” said Dr. Sudhir Singh, dean of the College of Business.
Sabatino, of Hampstead, will graduate with a double major in early childhood/elementary education and psychology. In addition to her outstanding GPA, she serves as president of the Frostburg Association for Educators of Young Children, developing a strong program of professional development in collaboration with her fellow officers. She is also involved in the Alpha Sigma Alpha Greek organization on campus. She completed internships in kindergarten and first grade at South Penn Elementary in Cumberland, as well as served as a kindergarten long-term substitute. “She is the only student I have ever worked with that had a true double major,” said Dr. Sarah O’Neal, assistant professor in the department of Education Professions. “She is so well-rounded, a true leader and has a great student voice for her peers. I love her ability to work with young children and her caring heart to help the most troubled children.”
Records, of Cumberland, will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in theatre with a focus on acting and a minor in musical theatre. Records made the Dean’s List every semester throughout his Frostburg career. He has been involved in various plays at Frostburg, performing in “Seven Keys to Baldpate,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” “Social Media Massacre,” “Silent Sky” and “Spring Awakening.” Records also voluntarily served as the technical director and assistant director at Braddock Middle School for the past five years for the “Braddock on Broadway” theatre program. He served as the assistant fight director during the Cumberland Theatre’s production of “August: Osage County” as well as the fight captain for “The Outsiders.” “Brian has demonstrated academic and artistic excellence, humility and outstanding service leadership during his time at FSU,” said Nicole Mattis, chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance. “He has a grounding personality and strong communication skills, making those around him feel empowered.”
