Sophomore Jamie Roberts Selected to Begin Year-Long Civic Engagement Projects
Frostburg State University student, Jamie Roberts, has been selected to join student fellows across the University System of Maryland (USM) institutions in this year’s cohort of the Langenberg Legacy Fellows Program. The Langenberg Legacy launched in 2022 to stimulate student leaders’ pursuit of micro-level civic engagement projects that will lead to solutions to broader issues threatening justice, human rights and the environment.
"I am very excited to be accepted into the Langenberg Legacy Fellowship Program,” says Roberts. “Civic engagement is an essential aspect of society. In college, it is important for students to learn how to be an engaged and informed citizen.”
Over the course of this year-long fellowship, Roberts and her peers will work collaboratively to build partnerships and connections and share best practices to make the biggest impact on their communities and beyond.
“To help improve civic engagement on campus, I intend to host a series of workshops that include topics such as voting, bias media, volunteering, and climate change,” notes Roberts. “My goal is to reach the students who are not typically involved in this manner such as athletes, Fraternity & Sorority Life, and Technology & Science majors.” She continued, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring civic engagement to Frostburg State University. Go Bobcats!"
Patrick O’Brien, FSU Director of Civic Engagement is excited to have Jamie as the university’s Langenburg Legacy Fellow for the upcoming academic year. “Her efforts to plan and implement a series of workshops that aim to educate individuals on aspects of Civic and Democratic engagement will be a great benefit to the campus community and our students.”
Roberts is well poised for success in this program. She is a sophomore double majoring in Law and Society and Political Science, and she holds several leadership positions at FSU. She is the vice president for Community Outreach for the Student Athletic Advisor Council, the President of the International Relations Club and a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success and has also been charged with reestablishing a Maryland Student Legislature group on campus. Roberts is also a member of the FSU softball team.
“Even as a busy student athlete, Jamie has always put effort into engaging in dialogue events, student organizations, and service on campus and in the community and I look forward to her increased involvement in civic engagement efforts on campus,” continued O’Brien.
“We were thrilled to see the successful projects from last year’s inaugural class of Langenberg Legacy Fellows and look forward to another year of exciting, ambitious, and important community engagement projects,” says Nancy Shapiro, Associate Vice Chancellor for Education and Outreach. “We see these Legacy projects as a way of ‘paying it forward’ as USM students across the state bring their knowledge, energy, and passion to bear on building community and solving problems.”
