Two Frostburg State University professors were recently appointed to Maryland Governor Wes Moore’s Commission on African Affairs for their professional and personal ties to Africa and Maryland’s diverse African population.
Dr. James Saku is a professor in the Geography Department where he coordinates the African American Studies program. Saku is also a member of the Association of American Geographers’ Africa Specialty Group, the University of Cape Coast Alumni Association in North America, the Council of Ewes in North America and the Ewe Association of Washington, D.C.
“Membership of Governor’s Commission on African Affairs offers a great opportunity for us to serve as a bridge between the state government and African community,” said Saku. “Understanding and addressing issues confronting African community is very important in making Maryland an inclusive and welcoming state.”
Dr. Alemseged Abbay, a professor in FSU’s History Department, specializes in global history, African history, Middle Eastern history, the comparative history of genocide and African American studies. He actively presents his research at national and international conferences.
“In this increasingly shrinking world, accommodating diversity is even more imperative,” said Abbay. “It is heartwarming to see Maryland becoming a haven for immigrants from all corners of the world. As a state commissioner for African Affairs, it gives me immense pleasure to render services in the honorable task of making the global village a better place for everyone to live in.”
