FSU Parks and Rec Department to Host Wellner Scholar Speaker
Mar 10, 2025 9:00 AM
Frostburg State University’s Department of Recreation and Parks Management will host guest speaker and Wellner Scholar, Dr. Rasul Mowatt, on Monday, April 7 from 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. in the Education and Health Sciences Center Room 208A on Frostburg’s main campus. The title of Mowatt’s presentation is “The Historical Legacy of Redlining on Parks.” It is free and open to the public.
Redlining came about in the 1930s as the result of color coding the U.S. government sponsored Homeowners Loan Corporation maps. Mowatt’s talk will help the audience better understand these maps, connecting their use to past housing and neighborhood policies, as well as debunking the myths surrounding their use.
Mowatt is the Department Head of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management in the College of Natural Resources and affiliate sociology and anthropology professor at North Carolina State University.
Funding for this event was possible through the Wellner Scholar Fund at Frostburg State University. For more information, contact Dr. Natalia Buta Lowe in the Department of Recreation and Parks Management at nbuta@frostburg.edu.
