Frostburg State University was once again named a Voter Friendly Campus by national nonpartisan organizations Fair Election Center’s Campus Vote Project and NASPA – Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education. FSU is one of 272 campuses in 39 states and the District of Columbia to receive this distinction.
The mission of the 2025 Voter Friendly Campus designation is to bolster colleges and universities’ efforts to help students overcome barriers to participating in the political process – every year, not just during years that feature federal elections. The initiative recognizes institutions that have planned and implemented practices that encourage their students to register and vote.
Frostburg was evaluated based on a written plan for how they planned to register, educate and turnout student voters in 2024 and how the University facilitated voter engagement efforts on campus.
“Civic engagement is ingrained into our campus culture. It can be seen in the passion of our students and the dedication and ongoing support of our faculty and staff, who work together to create impactful opportunities for democratic engagement,” said Partick O’Brien, FSU’s Director of Civic Engagement. “Signing up for the Voter Friendly Campus designation reaffirms our commitment to civic education and community engagement.”
As part of their effort to be designated a Voter Friendly Campus, Frostburg hosted voter registration drives, engaged in dialogues and held debate watch parties. On election day, the University also arranged a voter shuttle to local polling locations, and student organizations joined together to host an election watch party.
“I am proud of our efforts, and this recognition highlights the hard work, collaboration and dedication happening across campus to ensure we are engaging students to be informed, empowered and ready to lead their communities,” said O’Brien.
FSU has made intensive efforts to inform students of their civic duty and prepare them to be engaged participants in our democracy. The University is eager to continue to refine its tactics, expand efforts and engage students through 2025 and beyond.
The institutions designated Voter Friendly Campuses represent a wide range of two-year, four-year, public, private, rural and urban campuses collectively serving over four million students.
Just six other Maryland schools were designated Voter Friendly this year –Towson University, University of Maryland Baltimore County, John Hopkins University, Hood College, University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Morgan State University.
