eNews Alumni Spotlight highlights alumni who give back to Frostburg in some way – time, talent, treasure or any combination. This edition of eNews will feature a Bobcat couple, Jasmine Alston Monroe ’14 and Michael Monroe, Jr. ’14

Current Occupation: Michael - CEO and co-founder of The 6ixth Man LLC and Paraprofessional at Takoma Education Campus; Jasmine - Executive Team Leader at Target

Why do you love FSU?

Michael: I love FSU because of the lasting relationships I was able to build and sustain over the years. FSU also allowed me to grow and mature as a person inside and outside of the classroom. 

Jasmine: I had an amazing experience at FSU. FSU empowered me as a leader and introduced me to new experiences.

Why do you give back (time, talent and/or treasure) to FSU? 

Jasmine: We give back to FSU because FSU is home. My career at Target started because of leadership experiences Frostburg provided me. Not to mention I met my husband there. 

Michael: I choose to give back because FSU is expanding and evolving. I love what I see and would like to be a part of the school's community and provide mentorship to students.

Tell us about a person or persons from FSU who had an impact on your life.

Michael: Dr. Terri Massie-Burrell had a major impact on my life. She gave me the confidence to go after my dreams and always insisted that I should never sell myself or my talents short. 

Jasmine: So many people! Wray Blair, Julie Rando, Robert Cooper, Jeff McClellan, Ms. Kathi (Perkins) and Dr. (Amit) Shah! Each of them significantly impacted my personal and professional development.

What do you do for fun?

Michael: I still play basketball for fun.

Jasmine: For fun I like to spend time with our 5-month-old daughter, Savannah.

Tell us about a class or activity at FSU that has had a surprising effect on your life.

Jasmine: Springfest! My first Springfest, I met leaders from SGA, UPC and Greek life. I became involved in all of them during my time at FSU.

Favorite TV show.

Jasmine: “This Is Us”!! If you are not watching it, you’re missing some great TV!

Michael: My favorite shows are “The Wire” and “This Is Us.”

What is your favorite memory of your time as a Frostburg student?

Jasmine: I loved being involved at FSU. From being a Bobcat Ambassador, or a part of the Student Alumni Association, I felt like the staff and faculty really cared for me. 

Michael: I have a compilation of memories as a Frostburg student. It would be unfair to select one single moment. 

Favorite comfort food? 

Jasmine: Pasta.

Michael: Spicy garlic wings from Wild Things with bleu cheese (mandatory) and Bodyarmor SuperDrink. 

Favorite vacation spot? 

Jasmine: New Orleans

Michael: Anywhere I can turn my phone off and not think about it. 

Who is your doppelganger (famous person you resemble)? 

Jasmine: I don’t think I look like any famous people.

Michael: Golden State Warriors Assistant Coach Mike Brown.

What is a cause dear to your heart? 

Jasmine: The Ronald McDonald House does so much for families with ill children. I think their work is extremely important! 

Michael: I believe in giving back to the youth whole-heartedly. They are the future of this country, and having positive role models to look up to can change their lives forever. You never know if you can spark the idea that can change the world forever. 

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

Jasmine: Life coach.

Michael: Hedge fund manager.
