Wayne Scott ’89 was recognized as Frostburg’s 2018 College of Business Alumnus of the Year in May, acknowledging his significant contributions to the College and its students. Today, Scott is senior director of internal audit for SourceAmerica’s Washington, D.C., field office.
“Wayne is an exemplar of what committed, engaged alumni can do for our University,” said Dr. Sudhir Singh, dean of the College of Business. “From helping shape our newest MBA concentrations to generously supporting new scholarships, even taking the time to help students with resume writing and interview prep, Wayne has made a durable impact on our academic programs and our students.”
Scott, in turn, recognized Frostburg’s life-changing impact on him.
“I do this work because FSU has really helped me evolve as a person both professionally and personally,” he said. “What I’d like to see more is our alumni rising to help the University. Together, we really need to rally to help FSU become a stronger institution of higher learning.”
As a first-generation college student, Scott saw firsthand what a profound impact a college degree can make in a person’s life. He vividly recalled faculty and staff who helped shape his career, like Dr. Daniel Plucinski, a recently retired professor of business law who got Scott interested in internal audit; Dr. Alice Manicur, the dean of students who got him involved in extracurricular leadership activities; and Dr. Kathie Shaffer ’83, the business professor who taught him to look for the big picture in business.
Recently, Scott reconnected with FSU in hopes of paying that impact forward, offering mentorship and career guidance to current business students, helping at least one recent grad land a position with a multinational audit firm. Beyond his valuable time and advice, Scott played a major role in creating and fundraising for Frostburg’s Unfinished Business Scholarship in 2017, and he helped students endow the FSU Accounting Association Scholarship in 2016.
A member of the College of Business Advisory Board since September 2017 and vice chair since fall 2018, Scott leveraged 15-plus years of experience as vice president of internal audit for Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) to help the College shape and implement the new Business Analytics concentration for the MBA program.
Scott was also instrumental in launching Frostburg’s first-ever Career Summit last year, which he hosted at USAC’s D.C. office in November. The event gave students a great chance to connect with and learn from the experiences of successful FSU alumni (learn more in the spring 2019 edition of Profile magazine).
Despite Scott’s many contributions to FSU, he never expected to win an award: “I was completely surprised and honored,” he said.
