Spotlight: Chemistry & Physics

The Chemistry Program has accomplished several things this year. They have successfully integrated both chemistry and physics into one department, merging faculty and staff and sharing laboratories. One of the main attractions for visitors to Frostburg State University is the Planetarium. Due to age and new technology equipment, the Planetarium is no longer operable and cannot receive visitors or deliver instruction. Dr. Jason Speights, Physics professor and Director of the Planetarium submitted a $2,000,000 grant proposal to Congressman David Trone in May of 2023. The grant proposal moved through the House and Senate Appropriation Committees, and if awarded, it will be a Federal Earmark that becomes law for fiscal year 2025. The Planetarium at FSU is a major attraction for P-12 students and the community throughout the region including West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Dr. Matthew Crawford, chair of the Chemistry and Physics Department, secured funding to provide demonstrations for PreK-12 students and support student projects in advanced chemistry and physics research.
Dr. Alan Stone with Pacific Northwest Laboratories is inviting two faculty and students to tour the laboratory in Washington State December 9-11, 2024. This is yet another example of how the departments are working together and forging federal and national partnerships.
