Spotlight: Social Work

Dr. Nancy Giunta became the department chair of Social Work in July 2023. She has been very productive over the last year in that she had to hire new faculty to serve as field experience coordinator and methodology instructor in addition to serving as the coordinator and author of the self-study report for the Council for Social Work Accreditation in spring of 2024. This was a magnanimous task in that the Department of Social Work must be nationally accredited in order to offer the Social Work degree. While FSU will not have a decision regarding its reaffirmation until spring 2025, the site visit went exceptionally well as it was hosted on September 19, 2024.

Additionally, Dr. Giunta wrote a grant for $100,000 on food insecurity submitted to USDA for review. She and Dr. Garnell Washington named Frostburg State University as the sub grant contractor for another USDA grant with the Food Cooperative in Frostburg, Md. Dr. Garnell Washington will serve as the PI for the grant. The Department of Social Work is working closely with the school counseling program to collaborate in partnerships that will promote and educate on the importance of emotional well-being and mindfulness.
