Frostburg State University has officially removed the interim designation from Rubin Stevenson’s title, naming him the University’s permanent Director of Athletics. Stevenson had served in the interim role since July.
“I want to thank Dr. Smith for the opportunity to lead a department that means so much to me,” Stevenson said. “I’m also grateful to Troy Dell for the strong foundation he established, which I’m proud to continue building upon.”
Interim President Darlene Brannigan Smith, Ph.D., praised Stevenson’s appointment.
“On behalf of the entire campus community, I am proud to congratulate Rubin on earning this permanent role,” Smith said. “His deep institutional knowledge, unwavering commitment to FSU’s growth, and extensive understanding of NCAA athletics and the Mountain East Conference make him exceptionally well-suited for this position.
“Over more than 30 years of service to FSU, Rubin has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership, a strong commitment to our student-athletes and a clear vision for the future of Frostburg athletics,” she continued. “He has cultivated meaningful relationships with coaches, student-athletes, faculty, staff, donors, and community members. I am confident that under his leadership, our athletic programs will continue to thrive and evolve in impactful ways.”
Stevenson joined FSU in 1992 and has held several key leadership roles, including head football coach, Director of Compliance, and, most recently, Senior Associate Athletic Director.
As head football coach, Stevenson guided the Bobcats to sustained success, elevating the program’s competitive standing. During his tenure, 103 players earned All-Atlantic Central Football Conference honors, three received All-American recognition, and Stevenson was twice named Conference Coach of the Year. As Director of Compliance, he oversaw the academic progress and eligibility of all student-athletes while ensuring adherence to NCAA regulations.
Earlier this year, while serving as interim athletic director, Stevenson helped lead the Bobcat football program to a recordsetting season, setting the single-season record for wins in program history and advancing to its deepest NCAA Tournament run since 2017. The 2025 team also became the first in school history to win an NCAA Division II Tournament game, reaching the quarterfinals.
Throughout his three decades at FSU, Stevenson has played a significant role in enhancing the University’s athletic facilities. Major improvements completed under his leadership include full renovations of the pool and weight rooms, as well as transformative upgrades to Bobcat Stadium. Enhancements include updated utilities, a new press box and Presidential Suite, improved concessions and walkways, a renovated athletic training room, two team locker rooms, and new bleachers.
“One of my top priorities as Frostburg’s Athletic Director is strengthening the connection between our athletic programs, faculty, staff, and the broader community, while continuing to elevate FSU’s reputation for excellence in Division II athletics,” Stevenson said. “More than 30 years ago, I chose to make Frostburg my home. In that time, I’ve built lasting relationships and a deep sense of pride in this University. I want our students to feel that same pride and know they can find a place here to call home.”
