Frostburg State University’s Center for Literary Arts will host its 10th annual Nightsun Writer’s Conference from Thursday, July 27, to Sunday, July 30, in downtown Frostburg. Registrations are due July 1.
The program provides participants with workshop opportunities, individualized attention, feedback and craft sessions. The weekend also includes readings by participants, workshop faculty and special guests. The conference helps participants generate new material for publication, hone their craft of creative writing and forge a larger regional writing community.
This year’s program features workshops with Teri Ellen Cross Davis for poetry, Andy Duncan for speculative fiction, Alyce Miller for fiction and Michael O. Snyder for filmmaking.
Cross Davis holds an MFA in Creative Writing, Poetry, from American University. She is a Cave Canem fellow and a Pushcart Prize nominee. Her work has been published in many journals and anthologies, and Gival Press published her first poetry collection, “HAINT,” in 2016.
Duncan’s science fiction and fantasy writing has won three World Fantasy Awards, a Nebula Award and a Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. He has been a finalist 27 times for major awards in science fiction, fantasy and horror. His work has appeared in two published standalone collections, numerous anthologies, science fiction magazines and online. He teaches creative writing, journalism and public relations at FSU.
Miller, who was born in Switzerland to American parents, has lived in many areas around the U.S., and her short stories, poems, essays and articles have appeared in numerous journals. Her work has won multiple awards and distinctions, including the Ellen Gilchrist Award for Short Fiction and the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction.
Snyder is founder, filmmaker and photographer at D.C.-based Interdependent Pictures. He has directed, written and edited documentary and commercial productions for more than 20 organizations. His films have been official selections in 30-plus film festivals and have won numerous awards. His projects have been featured on television, in international publications and online. He also teaches sociology and filmmaking at Allegany College of Maryland.
The cost of participation in the conference is $350 plus accommodations and some meals. Recent FSU alumni may attend for $175. There is a $50 discount for returning Nightsun participants (only one discount permitted per participant). One-on-one faculty conferences will be available for an additional $25.
Maryland teachers who attend the conference are eligible to receive Continuing Education credit from the Maryland State Department of Education.
