Frostburg State University honored three outstanding employees, Lisa Toni Clark, Sgt. Thomas Bevan and Jeffrey Pfister, at its recent State of the University Presentation. The annual Staff Awards for Excellence recognize exceptional service to the institution. Recipients are nominated and chosen by their colleagues. This year’s award winners have served FSU for a combined total of 41 years.
Clark, director of A STAR! AmeriCorps, was honored in the Exempt (salaried) employee category. An FSU employee for 22 years who is based at the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown, she serves as an FSU ambassador, FSU recruiter, community leader, peace crafter, mentor and artist. Clark is a true servant leader for the University and the community, and she has served FSU and Western Maryland with distinction. Her constant contributions in her areas of involvement make her a worthy recipient of this award as one of her letters of support attests – “I have a home, car and a real-life dream because of Mrs. Lisa Clark, and every day when people tell me they are proud of me, I thank God for introducing me to Lisa Toni Clark.”
Bevan, of University Police, won the award in the Nonexempt Employee category. He was first hired as a student working in the summer for the FSU Facilities Department, and in 2005, he became an FSU groundskeeper. In February of 2010, Bevan was hired as a University Police Officer I. In addition to his duties as the evening shift supervisor, he also serves as the first aid training coordinator, assists with supervision of the body-worn camera program and serves as the FSU Fire Department liaison. In 2016, Bevan distinguished himself working with FSU’s Student Leadership Conference. Through his participation in this initiative, he was able to dispel negative perceptions some students have about police officers. He has also been a volunteer firefighter for more than 20 years and serves on the Board of Trustees as a member of Frostburg Fire Department No I.
Pfister was recognized in the Nonexempt Employee/Facilities/Maintenance category. A carpenter in the University’s multi-trades shop since October 2010, he is approachable and always willing to help with whatever needs to be done. In addition to his fine work on campus, Pfister has been also involved in the volunteer fire service for more than 32 years. He serves as the assistant fire chief for the Shaft Volunteer Fire Department.
This year marks the 20th year the Staff Awards for Excellence have been presented. To date, 57 employees have been honored.
Award recipients are given a plaque, a certificate commemorating their dedication and a monetary award. Staff Awards for Excellence are funded by the FSU Foundation’s Annual Fund Campaign.
