CES’ 2019-20 On the EDGE series at Frostburg State University will once again present cutting-edge performers who stretch the boundaries of their art forms. All shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., and aside from the Sept. 26 performance, will take place in the Alice R. Manicur Assembly Hall of FSU’s Lane University Center, which features informal table seating, comfortable couch and armchair seating, and food and beverage options.

A free On the EDGE performance of the colorful Minneapolis-based band Malamanya celebrates the spirited rhythms and melodies of Cuba and Latin America. Headed by bandleader Tony Schreiner and Cuban powerhouse vocalist Zusel Balbin, Malamanya’s music is certain to keep the audience in the mood to dance. The Thursday, Sept. 26, event takes place at the Clock Tower Quad on the FSU campus. Tickets are not required. In the event of rain, this performance will be held in Lane Manicur Hall.

On Thursday, Oct. 24, the series presents “beatbox-sax” musician Derek Brown. Crossing genres from jazz to classical to funk, without looping or electronic effects, Brown’s unique playing style has been hailed by music critics from National Public Radio, Downbeat Magazine and Jazziz. The event features guest appearances from the FSU Jazz Orchestra and jazz faculty members from FSU’s Department of Music.

Charismatic folk singer and songwriter Crys Matthews performs as part of On the EDGE on Thursday, Feb. 27. Matthews, who was awarded the grand prize at Lincoln Center’s NewSong Music Competition, writes compelling, thoughtful songs about love and life that often explore cultural and social justice themes. This event is supported by the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation.

Las Vegas quintet The Lique offers an On the EDGE performance on Thursday, April 16. The funky group mixes rap, jazz, soul and funk for an upbeat, interactive performance. Las Vegas Weekly proclaimed, “if anyone can get a crowd pumped, it’s Rasar Amani and his funky, sharp-dressed, jazzy hip-hop crew.”

On the EDGE tickets go on sale Monday, Aug. 26. Tickets are $15 and may be ordered by visiting the Cultural Event Series web site or by calling 1-866-849-9237 or 301-687-3137.
