Frostburg State University recently rededicated a space in the Harold J. Cordts PE Center in honor of John Leake, a coal miner who became a member of the House of Delegates and played a crucial role in the establishment of State Normal School No. 2 at Frostburg.

More than 35 members of Leake’s family were in attendance at the rededication of the John Leake Hall of Fame Room, including several great-grandchildren.

In 1898, it was Leake who introduced to the House a bill to establish State Normal School No. 2 at Frostburg. This bill failed, so Leake then added an amendment to the Appropriations Bill during that same session, which finally assured that the school would be built.
