Perseid Meteor Shower Star Party

 milky way

Wednesday, August 12, 2026
9:00 – 11:00 pm

Glendening Park, Northwest Football Field (Field 8)
Frostburg, MD 21532

Join us and the Cumberland Astronomy Club for a night of stargazing on the evening of the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. You can observe the meteors and we'll have telescopes setup to explore the wonders of the milky Way. In the Milky Way, you’ll see stellar nurseries, brilliant star clusters, and ancient stellar remnants.

We’ll provide star charts, telescopes, and guidance to help you navigate the cosmos. If you would like to set up your own telescope, please arrive between 8:00–8:30 pm. There’s plenty to see with binoculars, so bring those too if you have them.

If the weather is unfavorable, we'll announce a cancellation by 6:00 pm on the day of the event at www.frostburg.edu/planetarium.

Star party etiquette:

Only red light is allowed on the football field, except for green lasers for pointing out astronomical objects. Minimize your use of white light while getting in and out of your vehicle and on the way to the field. We'll provide red cellophane and rubber bands for your mobile devices and flashlights.
