Students, Faculty, and Staff

Students gain valuable experience by assisting with show production, hosting, and events. Most students volunteer, but we also hire federal work study students. Examples of student help include operating telescopes, producing audio, and editing movies. We are open to whatever skill you can contribute. Most students find that what they do, whether volunteering or learning a new skill, is useful for their CV or resume. Students from all majors help out at the Planetarium. We also do research! Examples include observatory characterization, cellular automata, and galaxy dynamics. Most of our research is for senior capstone projects. Students present their research at the FSU Undergraduate Research Symposium, and exceptional projects are presented at national conferences. View examples of previous student research.

Student assistants and researchers enjoy access to the Planetarium student work area, which includes a white board, two computer stations, and a coffee machine. Students regularly work on projects and assignments together in this area.

The Planetarium is a great venue for courses and events. Examples of courses that regularly use the Planetarium include Film and American Culture, Environmental Planning, and Introduction to Video Production. Examples of events include conferences, film festivals, and invited speakers.

We provide training for learning how to use the equipment in the Planetarium theater. Usually 15 min to a half hour of training is sufficient. The Planetarium Director is available to help troubleshoot any problems if they occur.
