Student Organizations
Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS)
SMACS organizes and conducts chemistry demonstrations for local elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as the general public. SMACS also hosts speakers and other activities and plans something exciting for National Chemistry Week every year. SMACS regularly wins awards from the American Chemical Society for its educational and outreach activities. Students from any major with an interest in chemistry and a desire to promote science in local schools are welcome. Membership in the American Chemical Society is encouraged, but not required. Dues are $5 per semester. Contact Dr. Katie Gares for more information.

Many chemistry majors join the Pre-Med Society, an organization for students planning to attend professional schools in the medical fields. The Pre-Med Society hosts speakers and events to prepare students for careers in the medical professions and hosts or participates in a number of charitable events, including blood drives, the Mission of Mercy, and the Relay for Life. Membership is open to all interested students. Dues are $10 annually. Contact Dr. Matthew Crawford for more information.
