Established to promote civic responsibility and increase knowledge of the political process, the Beall Institute sponsors a number of educational and internship opportunities for Frostburg State students and the community.
Initiatives
Beall Scholarship Program
The Beall Institute supports scholarships for students in their junior/senior year who have achieved a high level of academic performance and intend to pursue careers in government, public service or public policy education:
- Scholarships in units of $1,000
- Awarded through application and a competitive essay program

Beall Internship and Stipend
The Beall Institute supports internships and provides stipends for Frostburg State students in both Annapolis and Washington, D.C. The internship program of the FSU Department of Political Science:
- Places FSU students in a variety of international, national, state and regional internships in government, private and public organizations
- Awards stipends to qualified students to help meet financial needs such as housing and transportation while participating in an internship ensuring that all students have the opportunity to participate without undue financial burdens

Beall Research Fellowships
The Beall Institute promotes the scholarly use of the Beall Archives housed in the University’s Lewis J. Ort Library. Fellowship benefits include:
- Awards in units of $500 to conduct original research on Maryland history, politics and political leaders
- Publication of research papers supported by the fellowship in the “Beall Institute for Public Affairs Occasional Papers”

Outreach Programs
The Institute sponsors a major annual J. Glenn Beall Jr. Public Policy Symposium at Frostburg State University. The symposium:
- Focuses on an issue important to the citizens of Maryland
- Is free of charge and open to members of the campus community and the public
- Features Frostburg State University faculty; outside educators and researchers; national, state and local policy makers; journalists; and opinion makers
- Supports a limited number of smaller workshops and other special programs throughout the academic year and other sponsored activities as developed by the Board
- Includes other broad participation projects in the political process (such as voter registration, candidate forums, debates, etc.).
