Major: I am a double theatre major in the Acting track and Design Technology track with a minor in Musical Theatre.

Hometown: LaVale, Md.

kyle wolfordWhy did you choose to attend Frostburg State University?

FSU is close to home. Being able to stay close to family and do my studies is huge to me. Another big reason was how welcoming the campus is. Anywhere you go, someone always has a nice smile on their face or is starting up a friendly conversation. I feel very safe and very supported everywhere I go.

What extracurricular activities are you involved in?

Not technically extracurricular, but I have two on-campus jobs. I am a Barista at the Starbucks in the Lane Center, and I work for the Cultural Events Series as a Student Production Team Member. Besides those, I am very involved within the Theatre Department, either on or off stage.

What is your favorite memory as a student?

My favorite memory as a student is when I was asked to help out at the last minute as the Assistant Sound Designer of a show we did called "Puffs." The Sound Designer, Mackenzie Guynes '26, and I stayed up until 3 a.m. just finding and editing sounds. While it doesn't sound fun, it was where I found my love of sound design.

Which faculty and/or staff member has influenced you as a student?

My Theatre professor Nicole Mattis. Not only has she taught me so much about the art that I am studying, but she has become a mentor for me and made me into not only a better performer, but a better person. I know that she is there for me as an instructor or just to lend an ear. Her passion for what she teaches and the connection she makes with each of her students show what a blessing she is to this campus.

What advice would you give to a student currently studying your major?

Trust yourself. Whether you are working on the stage or behind the scenes, know that you are good enough to be there and you belong there. Showing your passion and commitment for your art will take you far.

Tell us about a class or activity at FSU that has had a surprising effect on your life.

Theatre 107 - Intro to Theatrical Vision. I have been a performer all my life and this class was a challenge for me because I'd never done anything involving the tech side of theatre. We had a project to do a scenic design of a play and make a model. After grading, my professor, Matthew Georgeson, pulled me aside and told me that I had a mind for design and I should consider studying it more. I did, and now it is part of my future career and something that I love.

What is a cause dear to your heart?

Showing the talent and dedication that comes from Western Maryland. I have my own social media platform called "Kickin' It With Kyle" where I spotlight artists and anything having to do with the arts to show how much passion comes from such a small area. It's truly been an amazing experience to meet so many people and to see how much heart goes into the arts around here.

What do you do for fun?

My favorite thing to do is just hang out with my friends. There is nothing like a good Sheetz run after a rehearsal to just talk and enjoy each other's company.

What three words can you use to describe FSU?

Inclusive, motivating and snowy!
