Pennsylvania, Somerset County
A "cruise ship in the sky.” February 10, 1988: “In a 10-mile area that borders Cambria and Somerset counties, numerous independent observers between 7:45 and 8:30 p.m. sighted a 60-foot-long object with several rows of lights that was described by some as looking ‘like a small cruise ship in the sky.’ The object passed over cars and trees at times at an altitude between 50 to 100 feet above the ground. The object, which emitted only a slight humming sound, at times projected bright multiple beams of light towards the ground.” See “Number of UFO Reports in State Unprecedented in ‘88.” UFO Newsclipping Service 235 (February 1989): 11-12. Submitted by Stan Gordon from the Bulletin of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, January 9, 1989.
Youghiogheny River Lake. Abandoned in the 1940s and submerged by the man-made lake, the once-thriving Somerset County town of Somerfield now exists--on dry land, at least--only as a place name (e.g., Somerfield Beach). But when lake levels are unusually low, Somerset's three-arch sandstone Great Crossings Bridge, dedicated in 1818, surfaces like a ghost, just north of the modern U.S. 40 bridge. It still can be walked across, until the waters rise again. For a video of one such visitation, see "Most People Have No Idea There's an Underwater Ghost Town Hiding in America's Heartland."
