West Virginia, Tucker County
Davis. “Davis is the highest incorporated town east of the Mississippi. This exalted elevation brings out the reds in the trees earlier than elsewhere in the state, making it the ideal setting for the September Leaf Peepers Festival.” The town’s website is https://daviswv.us/. “Get Tuckered.” The slogan (and URL, and hashtag) of the Tucker County Convention and Visitors Bureau is hard to beat: https://gettuckered.com/.
St. George. Moving the county seat from here to Parsons in 1893 was far from peaceful. On August 2, five days before the scheduled move, about 300 men from Parsons and Davis decided not to wait. Like an invading army, they braved hostile gunfire and dynamite blasts on the six-and-a-half-mile trek to St. George, where they defied the sheriff’s order to disband, then looted the old courthouse. “The crowd took possession of the records and much of the contents of the building. Returning home the men deposited the records and other valuables in the new courthouse at Parsons, but not without numerous fistfights and bad feeling between the two localities.” See Hunt, J.
