Oxfam Hunger Banquet
Ten days before Thanksgiving, the Office of Civic Engagement hosts the Oxfam Hunger Banquet to educate members of the University community on hunger and poverty facing different areas of the world. Attendees’ draw their “fate” at the door to determine if they are high-income, middle-income or low-income. The meals served reflect the income level drawn. Be part of this nationwide, campus activity to discuss the issue of hunger in our world.
Relay for Life
In partnership with the American Cancer Society, Colleges Against Cancer hosts Relay for Life to raise money to fund cancer research, raise cancer awareness, and host survivor support programs. Teams of participants raise money and walk around a designated part of campus for at least 6 hours to show their support for those who are fighting the disease 24 hours a day. The event also includes music, live performances, games, and prizes.
Toys for Happiness Drive
Toys for Happiness collects unwrapped children’s toys to give to children in the area. Toys can be donated at the President's Holiday Reception each December. Toys are collected by the Office of Civic Engagement in Lane University Center room 234 for two weeks prior to the Reception and will be displayed at the event.
Deep Creek Dunk & Hooley Plunge
Take a plunge into the icy waters of Deep Creek Lake in February and Lake Habeeb at Rocky Gap in March to support Special Olympics and other programs for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Special Olympics Maryland Winter Games
Be part of this nationally recognized winter sporting event for people with disabilities held in Western Maryland. Service opportunities include helping athletes, the Parade of Athletes and being timers and scorekeepers.
Frostburg’s Beautify the ’Burg
Hosted the first Saturday in May every year, Beautify the ‘Burg is an annual event that brings students, faculty, staff and community members together to clean up Frostburg. Volunteers can register individually or as a group to complete such tasks as planting trees, painting, and removing trash. Breakfast, lunch

Alternative Break Trips
FSU Alternative Break is committed to organizing off-campus service trips for students. Students will serve with Hurrican Ida relief in Houma, LA over winter break. Applications for the trip will be available approximately two months prior to the trip departure.

Sponsor-A-Family Thanksgiving Baskets
Through the annual Sponsor-A-Family, academic and administrative departments, student groups or individuals can help make a difference in a family’s life in Western Maryland by providing a Thanksgiving food basket to a family in need. Since its beginning, the Sponsor-A-Family has provided Thanksgiving baskets for over 500 families in Western Maryland. If you, or your group, is interested in sponsoring a family for the Thanksgiving holiday or just making a donation, please contact the office of Civic Engagement for information on how to donate. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Western Maryland
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Hosted by the American Cancer Society, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a 5K walk held in Cumberland, Md, during October. This event is an opportunity to unite community members, build awareness and raise funds to fight breast cancer.
