Mission of the Lab
Communication Leadership Lab Vision
The Communication Leadership Lab is a "democracy hub" focused on teaching, practice and research of communication leadership. It is the only hub in the tri-state region west of Washington, DC.
Western Maryland and the surrounding area is an intersection of urban and rural cultures. While Frostburg is a rural community, Frostburg State University has many students and employees from the DC-Baltimore corridor, the Tristate region and beyond.
Our region also faces many challenges requiring communication leadership such as environmental stewardship, energy solutions and economic development. From supporting the medical marijuana industry and wind-powered energy solutions to developing front streets and handling the opioid epidemic, Western Maryland has a myriad of difficult issues in need of communication leadership.
Our preliminary vision for a communication leadership lab is to create opportunities for our students and regional citizens to navigate the complexities of our changing world. The lab does this by providing access to expert, educational and technological resources that encourage development of communication leadership skills.
Through teaching, partnering, research and grant-seeking, the Communication Leadership Lab will:
- Mentor, tutor and train students and community members in subjects including public speaking, online conferencing, citizen videography and democracy engagement techniques;
- Plan online and face-to-face communication events, including dialogue sessions and forums to support our network of campus and community partners;
- Create cooperative democracy and sustain campus-community relationship through student-faculty-partner research, internship and consulting collaborations
