Master of Science in Nursing - PMHNP
Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) Program
Program Overview
The M.S. in Nursing curriculum is guided by the AACN Essentials of Master’s Education in Nursing. Our Nurse Practitioner concentrations align with the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies. This program prepares experienced baccalaureate nurses to provide high-quality primary or mental health care in today’s healthcare environments, with a focus on rural communities while remaining inclusive of urban populations.
Blended Program Delivery
Approximately 90–95% of coursework is online through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous formats. Limited on-campus immersion varies by course. A mandatory on-campus orientation before the first semester equips students with the tools needed for success.
Flexible Study Options
- Full-time: 7 consecutive semesters, including summer
- Part-time: 10 consecutive semesters, including summer
Programs start each Fall.
Target Students & Rural Focus
FSU welcomes experienced RNs, particularly those living and working in rural, medically underserved areas. Graduates are encouraged to return to their communities to provide advanced care. Rural healthcare needs are integrated throughout the curriculum, though rural residency is not required for admission.
Practicum Courses
PMHNP students complete 765 clinical practicum hours across diverse settings, primarily in their local communities. Students select practicum sites with support from the Clinical Placement Coordinator, who ensures preceptors and sites meet accreditation and program standards. Affiliation agreements are finalized with faculty and the university legal team prior to each practicum experience.
Tuition & Cost
Tuition is currently under review by FSU and the University System of Maryland. Updated information will be available on the Graduate Programs website.
