The SOFI Program

Summer Online First-Year Initiative (SOFI) at FSU

The SOFI Program (Summer Online First-Year Initiative) is an award-winning opportunity that gives incoming first-year students the chance to begin their academic journey before the start of the fall semester. Designed with flexibility and affordability in mind, SOFI allows students to complete introductory-level courses online during the University’s second six-week Summer Session. By enrolling early, students can lighten their fall course load, explore subjects of interest, and familiarize themselves with Frostburg State University’s Learning Management System, Canvas.

Registration for SOFI courses takes place during Bobcat Orientation Welcome Sessions, where students work closely with faculty advisors to create a fall class schedule that complements their summer coursework. This approach ensures that students receive individualized support while transitioning into college life.

Tuition & Fees

  • SOFI tuition and fees are billed immediately upon registration.
  • The charges are separate from the fall semester bill and are due within 48 hours of registration, but no later than June 16th.
  • Credits earned from SOFI apply to the summer term, not to the fall term.
  • No dedicated financial aid is available for SOFI courses, so students should plan accordingly.

Despite the lack of financial aid, the program remains a cost-effective option for students seeking to gain early credits and prepare for their first semester.

Some Facts

  • SOFI courses introduce first-year students to online learning expectations and digital tools used throughout their academic career.
  • Most courses are asynchronous, giving students the flexibility to complete assignments at times that work best for them.
  • Students are limited to 3 credit hours through the SOFI program, ensuring a manageable summer workload.

These facts highlight SOFI’s role not only as a bridge to academic readiness but also as a practical introduction to college-level expectations in a digital learning environment.

Is SOFI Right for You?

Before enrolling in SOFI, consider whether the program aligns with your academic and personal circumstances. Students should reflect on their availability, study habits, and access to resources.

  • Can you dedicate several hours each day to reading, assignments, and online discussions?
  • Do you have any travel plans, vacations, or personal commitments that might conflict with the summer session?
  • Will you have consistent internet access and a reliable device during the entire course period?

Students who can answer “yes” to these questions are more likely to succeed and benefit from the SOFI experience. If you are uncertain, talk with your academic advisor during your Bobcat Welcome Session to explore your options.
