Military Tuition Assistance-Return of DoD Funds

Military Tuition Assistance: Return of DoD Funds after Drop/Withdraw

Return of Tuition Assistance: Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws from a course or the institution, or stops attending a course, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of TA funds originally awarded.

To comply with the Department of Defense policy, Frostburg State University will return any unearned TA funds on a prorated basis through at least the 60% portion of the period for which the funds were provided. TA funds are earned proportionally during an enrollment period, with unearned funds returned based upon when the student stops attending. These funds are returned to the military Service branch.

Return of DoD Funds after Drop/Withdraw

The Percentage of TA Earned equals the Days Completed Before Drop, Withdrawal, or Last Day of Participation divided by the Total Number of Days in the Course/Semester.

Instances when a Service member stops attending due to a military service obligation, the educational institution will work with the affected Service member to identify solutions that will not result in student debt for the returned portion by following our Call to Active Duty Policy.

If you are using TA to pay for your education and drop, withdraw from, or stop attending a course prior to completing 60 percent of the course, the Department of Defense (DoD) requires that FSU return any unearned TA  funds to the department based on how much of the course you completed and that you pay a portion of those returned funds. You may owe a portion of your tuition to FSU and a portion to your military branch.

Before dropping or withdrawing from a course, please contact the Veterans Services Office or University Billing Office to determine if you will owe funding back to FSU and/or your military branch

Your earned Military Tuition Assistance (TA) is determined based on the following formula:

The Percentage of TA Earned equals the Days Completed Before Drop, Withdrawal, or Last Day of Participation divided by the Total Number of Days in the Course/Semester.

Please note: If you officially or unofficially withdraw from a course and did not complete at least 60 percent of the course, you may not be eligible for the total amount initially awarded through Tuition Assistance. In cases where some or all of the Tuition Assistance must be returned to the military, you will be responsible for all balances on your FSU student account.
