Regional Math/Science Center

About RMSC

The Regional Math/Science Center (RMSC) at Frostburg State University (FSU) is a federally-funded program of the US Department of Education. The primary goal of our program is to provide academic support to students and help them develop to their full potential so they will enter and be successful in post-secondary education in the fields of math and/or science. In order to meet our goal, we provide students with many opportunities for growth, including a challenging summer academic program, hands-on field experiences, interactions with mathematicians and scientists, career exploration workshops, study skills workshops, and a variety of other activities.

The RMSC is funded to serve ten target high schools in Maryland:

  • Allegany County: Fort Hill HS and Mountain Ridge HS
  • Baltimore City: Baltimore City HS and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute
  • Frederick County: Brunswick HS, Frederick HS and Gov. Thomas Johnson HS
  • Washington County: Boonsboro HS, North Hagerstown HS and South Hagerstown HS

The RMSC is completely FREE for all participants!

Students participating in the program attend a two, three, five or six week summer residential program at Frostburg State University and continue to receive support throughout the academic year. Once a student is accepted into the program he/she is encouraged to continue participating in the program until graduation from high school.

Program Benefits

Students that are selected to participate in this program have an opportunity that can help them tremendously in obtaining admission into and successfully completing a college program. Once a student becomes a member of the RMSC, we make a commitment to do all that we can to help them succeed; we expect in return, that they will make the same commitment. Our expectations of students are very high because we know that success does not come easily. A student must decide that they want to succeed and then do all that they can to achieve this success, keeping in mind that we will be behind them for support the entire time.

Academic Year

Throughout the Academic Year the RMSC students and staff maintain contact to ensure students are on track for success in their classes throughout the school year. The RMSC offers academic assistance by monitoring academic performance, providing study materials and tutoring and offering course recommendations to RMSC students. It is import for students to keep in regular contact with the RMSC office so their individual needs can be assessed.

The RMSC also offers assistance with college preparation. Seniors are offered assistance with college, financial aid and scholarship applications; and RMSC provides application fee waiver letters for seniors to submit with their college applications. RMSC students also receive assistance with fees for exams. The RMSC offers fee waivers and assistance registering for SAT and ACT exams, as well as assistance paying for AP examinations. Students should contact our office before paying any exam fee.

The RMSC offers educational and cultural field trips throughout the academic year. These trips include college tours, visits to historical landmarks, theaters, museums and more.

Students are also eligible to earn a stipend for each RMSC quarter by meeting program requirements.
