Basic Information for Students in F-1 Status
Maintaining Your Status as an F-1 Student
As an F-1 student, you are admitted to the U.S. for “Duration of Status” (D/S). This means you can stay in the U.S. as long as you follow the rules for F-1 students.
Your F-1 Visa → a stamp in your passport from a U.S. Embassy, used only for entry into the U.S.
Your F-1 Status → starts when you enter the U.S. and is managed by USCIS. You can lose your status if you do not follow the rules.
If you lose your status, you may need to apply for reinstatement or leave the U.S. Always follow these rules to keep your F-1 status.
Rules to Maintain Your F-1 Status
- Keep your passport valid at all times.
- Attend the school listed on your I-20.
- If you transfer schools, complete an immigration transfer within 30 days. (This is different from transferring academic credits.)
- Study full-time during the school year. Summer enrollment is not required by USCIS (check your department for rules).
- If you need more time, apply for an I-20 program extension at least 30 days before it expires.
- Get a new I-20 if you change degree levels (for example: bachelor’s to master’s).
- Have your I-20 signed by a DSO before traveling outside the U.S.
- Report any address change within 10 days to the Center for International Education (CIE), your department, and the Registrar.
- Do not work off-campus unless you get permission from CIE or USCIS. On-campus work is allowed up to 20 hours per week during classes (full-time allowed during breaks) with a Social Security Number (SSN).
