Welcome to the Department of Physical and Environmental Science!

A degree in the physical and environmental sciences is your key to a career full of engaging challenges and innovations that can help the entire world. Our degree programs combine individualized support from small class sizes with hundreds of hours of hands-on field and laboratory experience you develop the skills to solve modern and emerging challenges in astrophysics biochemistry, climate science, economic geography, environmental management, geospatial science, sustainability, and more!

In the Department of Physical and Environment Science, you will apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world human and environmental problems with impacts ranging from the molecular to the global scale. Work one-on-one with a faculty member on a research project, attend and present at regional and national conferences, complete internships with in the government and industry, and even study abroad! You can also get involved with the Multimedia Learning Center and the Western Maryland Regional GIS Center.

Choose your path

The Department of Physical and Environmental Science offers five undergraduate majors, each with their own options. Additionally, you can complete one of eight minors as part of your undergraduate degree. The department is also the home to the Master of Environmental Management degree.
