This platform is designed to showcase and celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and students, as well as their wide-ranging contributions to our broader community.

CBECMS is pleased to share the cheering news of the accomplishment of our student team at the recently concluded Case Competition hosted as part of the Society for Advancement of Management International Business Conference 2024.

FSU student, Daniel Baiyeshea, recently joined several of his peers from across the system as a student panelist for the University System of Maryland's Student Success Symposium hosted by Bowie State University.

FSU’s departments of Biology, Educational Professions and Recreation and Parks Management recently hosted a presentation by Dr. Mamie Parker, titled “A Black Woman’s Journey: Breaking Concrete Blocks to Help Save Our Planet to Save Ourselves." Parker is the former Student Conservation Association chair and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) head of Fisheries and Habitat Conservation.

Students from Northern and Southern High Schools in Garrett County, MD took a field trip to FSU campus to visit with Business Program Chairs as well as Nursing faculty and the Childrens' Literature Centre.

Representatives from Deleon & Stang, recently came to speak to students from the Department of Accounting.

Dr. Michael Flinn, Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, joined four other faculty and staff members from Frostburg State University to coach teams in the First Lego League Competitions this year, and each team was invited to attend the Maryland State First Lego League Competition on Saturday, February 24, 2024, to compete against 70 other teams.

Congratulations to FSU's team, Kick Master 3000, for winning first place at this year's University of Maryland College Park Design Day. The team's project objective was to produce a football holder that mimics a fast-paced and realistic field goal scenario to better prepare kickers during practice for a game.

Western Michigan University's Haworth College of Business invited Dr. Evan Offstein (MGMT) to speak in a couple of classes as well as a University-wide event in early November 2023.

On November 8-9, 2023, seven speakers from various industries came to FSU to speak to select classes within the CBECMS. Six of the seven speakers are alumni and each speaker was assigned a faculty and student liaison to assist with coordination. Student liaisons were also able to use the experiences as developmental opportunities to engage with a successful business professional.

CBECMS and The Allegany Chamber of Commerce collaborated to hold the 2023 Allegany County Local Business Showcase in the evening of October 18 at the Lane Student Center. Dr. Dong Wook Huh (MGMT) co-chaired the event to add several practical workshops throughout the day and helped organize a discussion forum on building and deepening the relationship between the College and the local business community.

Members of FSU SHRM and their advisor visited The Deep End on Frostburg's Main Street to learn about ethics, entrepreneurship, and labor relations.

Homecoming 2023 was nothing short of spectacular thanks to the vibrant spirit showcased at the first-ever Intercollege Tailgate hosted by the Recreation and Parks Department with the support of the Student Recreation Society. This exciting event brought together the College of Business, Engineering, and Computational & Mathematical Sciences (CBECMS) and the College of Education and Health & Natural Sciences (CEHNS) for an unforgettable celebration.

The FSU AMA chapter (formerly known as the Marketing Club) and their advisor, Dr. Lilly Ye (MKTG) traveled to New York City for the One Diversity Industry conference at Fordham University in New York City on October 6, 2023. This student-centered conference, which focused on personal branding, diversity, and leadership in the business world, provided a unique chance for the students to immerse themselves in diverse perspectives, network with industry professionals, and enhance their understanding of global business practices.

Recently, 70 students applied to participate in the regional Bobcat Innovation Launch Pad competition Sept. 22-24 hosted by Frostburg State University in partnership with TEDCO's Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII), Deloitte’s Innovation Lab, and the University System of Maryland Launch Fund.

Student members from the Marketing Club and FSU Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) hosted a picnic at Parris N. Glendening Park to open the new Fall 2023 semester.

Dr. Michael Monahan, professor and chair of Frostburg State University’s Department of Management, has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the President’s Distinguished Faculty Award. This award recognizes a faculty member who has provided exceptional service to the University and has advanced its mission, goals and strategic planning initiatives.

Dr. Dong Wook Huh, Associate Professor of Management, became a U.S. citizen on Sept. 7, 2023.

In the summer of 2023, Dr. Xunyu Pan, an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Technologies, was invited as a research mentor for the National Science Foundation Research Traineeship Program (NRT).

The Frostburg State University chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi inducted 36 new members during a ceremony held May 6 at FSU’s Gira Center. The Society is the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

With a recent nod from the American Marketing Association (AMA) granting them national chapter status, the FSU Marketing Club has officially made the jump from a campus group to a recognized player on the national stage.

With immense shock and sadness, the College of Business lost a cherished colleague, Dr. Kathie Shaffer, on the evening of Tuesday. March 1st.

SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) recently awarded a 2021-2022 Superior designation to the FSU SHRM student chapter for providing superior growth and development opportunities to its student members.

After the retirement of Dr. Tom Sigerstad as Associate Dean in March 2022, the College of Business Executive Council began a national search for a new Associate Dean as the spring semester was coming to an end.

Despite the pandemic and China’s Covid control, Hunan University of Technology and Business (HUTB) had yet another successful graduating class! 121 students graduated from the joint FSU-HUTB program.

Dr. Rebecca M. Chory, Professor of Management, was awarded Top Paper honors at the 72nd annual meeting of the International Communication Association (ICA) at their annual meeting in Paris, France on May 27.

Wednesday, April 27, marked the day when the College of Business hosted its first Etiquette Dinner in the GIRA/CCIT 397 Meeting Room on campus for students in the MGMT 310 Career and Professional Development II course. This event was jointly co-sponsored in its entirety by Mr. Jim Ketterman and the College of Business Advisory Board.

Under the auspices of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) program, 41 students from Southern and Northern High Schools traveled to Frostburg State University on April 20th to tour the main campus and learn more about the University’s College of Business.

The FSU Marketing Club has been striving to return to normalcy through several meaningful engagement activities over the Spring 2022 semester with some of the worst effects of COVID-19 receding. Student membership of the club kept growing despite the disruptions imposed by the pandemic.

Dr. Thuong Harvison (FINA) had her research published in the top-tier scholarly outlet, the Journal of Banking of Finance.

Dr. Ali Ashraf, Associate Professor of Finance, has been appointed as Chair of the Department of Marketing and Finance beginning Spring 2022. Dr. Ashraf came to FSU in Spring 2013. He succeeds Dr. Carol Gaumer, Professor of Marketing, to serve in this role.

The faculty of the College of Business selected Mr. Trent Keller as speaker for December 2021. Keller, of Hagerstown, Maryland, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in General Management and a minor in Human Resources Management.

The Advisory Board of the College of Business elected Mr. Wayne Scott ‘89 (ACCT) as its new Chair and Mr. Jason VanSickle ‘98 (SOCI) as Vice Chair at its most recent meeting, held in December 2021.

Dr. Kiersten Bradley, Instructor in Accounting, successfully defended her dissertation and was awarded her Doctor of Business Administration Degree from University of Maryland Global Campus in December 2021.

What began as a casual conversation between two department chairs, Dr. Robert Moore (Sociology) and Dr. Michael Monahan (Management), soon blossomed into a new combined minor, Diversity in Management.

Mr. Jay Morwick presented a virtual session titled “The Future Workplace.” Morwick, an accomplished author and consultant for such organizations as the U.S. Patent and Trade Office (USPTO) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS), offered key insights from his research on how to better work from home and engage in remote work.

Dr. Chiulien Venezia, Professor of Accounting, took a semester-long sabbatical leave to Taiwan during Fall 2021 and offered reflections on her experiences in her native country.

In November, The Office of Student Life hosted a trio of presentations under the banner “Unleash Your Inner Leader” with two of the three spots held by CoB faculty.

Organized by the FSU Marketing Club, this high-profile event was co-headlined by Mr. Gordon Hester, who spent 25 years as former CEO of Roberti Enterprises, with $10 billion in annual sales and 100,0000 distributors in over 25 countries, and Mr. Connor Hester, a young entrepreneur, and CEO of ShapeTech Solutions.

At Frostburg’s invitation, Mr. Damon Lester, president of the National Association of Automobile Dealers (NAMAD), made his second visit to the campus and presented to Ms. Heidi Shadel’s Professional Development I and II classes.

This past October, the Baylor School (Chattanooga, TN) Class of 1971 celebrated its 50th high school class reunion and part of the festivities involved inducting former students into their Athletics Hall of Fame. Dr. Bill Anderson (ECON) was included in the 2021 prestigious group for his performance in Track and Field.

In September 2021, the College of Business suddenly lost beloved faculty member, Dr. Eyad Youssef, Assistant Professor of Marketing, who came to FSU in Fall 2016. An excellent teacher-scholar and mentor to his students, Dr. Youssef truly distinguished himself in the area of service to the Department, College, and University.

The College continued its journey in Fall by responding to persistent pandemic-induced uncertainties – and some of the attendant fiscal consequences - with nimbleness and resolve. Faculty, staff, students, alumni, and members of the Advisory Board worked individually and collectively to advance its vision, as always.
